What is Best Smart Phone Operating System as Android Cell Phone Leads Blackberry and iPhone OS in Sales Number

By

Android Cell Phone Operating System Leading SmartPhone, Beat Blackberry and iPhone Sales

The Android cell phone operating system is now the leading smartphone. In the first quarter we saw the Android cell phone operating system overtaking the Apple iPhone cell phone operating system to become the second biggest seller of smartphones in America. In the second quarter Google’s Android has become the leading smartphone in the United States as it beat both Blackberry and iPhone Sales. This was before the security issues that have seen the RIM Blackberry cell phone operating system blocked in many countries in Asia and the Middle East. The iPhone saw its launch of its new iPhone 4 iOS marred by antenna issues also.

Cell phone industry researcher NPD said Google Android cell phone operating systems bought in the April to June period made up a third of all smartphones purchased in America. It was the first time since 2007 that the BlackBerry was not the biggest selling smartphone. The Apple iPhone gained a percentage point to remain third largest seller with a 22 percent share. The big loser was the BlackBerry, which lost nine percent of its marketshare. Blackberry fell from 37 percent to 28 percent of the smartphone marketshare.

Research in Motion unveiled a new touchscreen blackberry mobile device in an attempt to relaunch its consumer image. Android has a wider market saturation affect being available on different manufacturers smartphones. In the second quarter Motorola's Droid is America’s top selling Android handset ahead of HTC's Droid Incredible and EVO 4G. This wider range of options has helped the android cell phone operating system become the best selling.

Android Overtakes Blackberry as No.1 Smartphone

In the second quarter of 2010 the Android continued its surge of popularity in the smartphone market to become the most popular smart phone in America. In the first quarter Google said 65,000 Android cell phones were activated each day. In the second quarter that has leapt to 160,000 Android phones. Google CEO Eric Schmidt says that activation number is around 200,000 smartphones with the Android operating system now in August.

Schmidt said from the Techonomy conference in Lake Tahoe that “It looks like Android is not just phenomenal but an incredibly phenomenal success in its growth rate'.

Affordability is a big issue with smartphone unit prices down 9 percent from a year ago. Smartphones averaged $143 in the second quarter.

Google offers its Android software to other phone-makers whereas as Apple and RIM do not farm out their operating systems. Google said as of April twelve vendors currently offer 34 different devices with the Android software.

After the first quarter Apple made a statement not long after the NPD sales release and said it is isn’t as straight forward as Android being number two. This was referring to the Verizon Wireless buy-one-get-one offer, which boosted sales dramatically. NPD analyst Ross Rubin said, 'As in the past, carrier distribution and promotion have played a crucial role in determining Smartphone market share'.

Google Nexus One Phone

Google’s success needs to be tempered with Sprint no longer supporting the Nexus One, the smartphone sold directly on the Google website and developed by Google and HTC. Sprint said the HTC EVO 4G phone is compatible with the Sprint next-generation high-speed networks. The HTC EVO 4G however also utilizes Google's Android software.

The Nexus One has had limited success having sold 135,000 Nexus One phones in its first 74 days on the market, compared with the 1 million iPhones Apple sold in the same time frame when it released the device in 2007. The Apple iPhone has sold more than 51 million since it launched in 2007 with over 200,000 apps available for the iPhone. These are very solid figures to overcome as Android Overtakes iPhone as No.2 Smart Phone operating software in the first quarter. Will this be sustainable or be overtaken as the new iPhone 4.0 has broken records since its launch. The affordability is a huge issue here with iPhone 4 over $800.

Android Sells More Than iPhone for First Time

In the first quarter of 2010 we saw Android sell more smartphones than iPhone to become the second best selling smartphone behind Blackberry. The smart phone is an increasingly competitive marketplace in the United States. Apple has got a big flow on boost from the success of its new iPad tablet. However Google is now the second most popular provider of smartphone software in the United States. There is something to be said from being the leading search engine and the comfort that brings.

Highlights of Q1 2010

  • The most popular smartphone remained the Blackberry phone which has 36 percent of the smartphone market.
  • Google's Android operating system now has 28 percent of American. smartphones sold n the first quarter of 2010.
  • Apple's iPhone sales remained flat at 21 percent.

Smartphone Evolution Failure of the Kin One and Kin Two

Smartphones have become the frontline for many technology companies as they posture for the next communication shift. The other major prominent smart phone, and former darling is Palm inc. Palm was bought out by Hewlett-Packard Co for $1.2 billion. Palm Inc sells two smartphone models based on its WebOS operating system.

Microsoft's Kin Disaster

Microsoft Corp unveiled the Kin in April in two versions, the Kin One and Kin Two. These phones were available exclusively from Verizon Wireless since May 13 for $50. However this was a lesson in abject failure for cell phone operating systems. Microsoft announced on June 30 that it was scaling production back and canceled a European launch for the Kin.

Verizon Wireless not long after confirmed that it had officially ended the sale of the Kin ONE and Kin TWO. Microsoft announced to the handful of Kin owners they will continue with maintenance and operation for the Kin.  There have been many reasons for the Kin’ failure, the phone itself, the Verizon data plan and poor marketing strategies.

Let us hope the much-vaunted Microsoft phone 7 launch does not go the way of Microsoft’s unsuccessful Kin project.   Microsoft has launched a revamped version of its mobile operating system and later in the year will launch Windows Phone Series 7. The consumer should be the big winner out of this smartphone battle for market share.  Marketing, branding and affordability are all key factors in a smartphones success as evidenced by the Android cell phone operating system.

Comments on Android Cell Phone Operating System Leading SmartPhone

Well - I'm in no rush to replace my iPhone. But it's fascinating to hear about the rush-to-glory waged among the smart-phone folks! Again - one would hardly perceive a recession, much less a mini-depression in progress! Thus proving again - it's probably not going on among the folks who always hop on the latest bandwagons, anyway. Or maybe the folks looking to acquire the smartest smart phone hope that its powerful OS or apps will be better at getting them a job or selling their house at a better price - or all of the above! hahah!

Very good report, billy!

I prefer Android actually. But whatever it is, I'm anticipating for the network 4G. Great hub.=)

Nellieanna well put it does give a strong contrast to the have and have nots when I put this in tandem with the Paget Phillipe watch going for 6 million francs also. Perhaps a lot of it - with the phones is a lot of pure consumerism which is the problem with the bailouts etc, taking no responsibility and living beyond your means. I laughed at the quote with the magic apps to sell your house. No doubt hey tout hose also. I still have my old Palm Treo - clearly I am behind the times :) I see no point in changing and certainly spending more money on something that will be superceded very quickly.

hubpageswriter thanks for the feedback - it will be interesting how the 4G is perceived and who is the new leader! The iPhone 4.0 has multitasking so that will probably grab a few - I will stick with my trusty old Treo :)

Melinda an excellent point - it is good to see an industry where creative competition prevails.

hypnodude 2 years ago

Very interesting Billy, here we don't have Android, but surely when it arrives things will become pretty better. Competition, when it's real, is always good for the consumer. Rated up!

billyaustindillon 2 years ago

Thanks hypnodude - yes competition makes a world of difference, more exciting advancements and of course prices. It is a pity much of consumables face limited competition in the world today. Yes I am sure when Android arrives you will have a great range of serves and affordability.
