BP Gulf Oil Spill Worse Than Exxon Valdez Disaster

BP Gulf Oil Spill is Larger Than the Exxon Valdez Disaster

Public anger grows as official estimates push the BP Gulf oil spill is worse than the Exxon Valdez disaster. The Gulf of Mexico oil spill disaster is now flowing unabated and into its 42nd day. The sprawling mess continues to grow with the Mississippi and Alabama coasts now threatened. Gulf fishing has already been banned and critical oyster reefs are threatened. U.S. Geological Survey Director Marcia McNutt has confirmed the BP oil spill is greater than the estimated 257,000 barrels Exxon Valdez tanker disaster of 1989. Exxon Valdez ran aground when a drunken skipper went off course. Exxon has spent billions to clean Alaska's Prince William Sound up following the oil spill disaster.

This weekend BP failed with the 'top kill' attempt to plug the leaking oil. BP is attempting to lower a marine riser package cap. It will take about a week to determine whether this option to capture oil from the well rather than plug it is successful. What is sobering is the BP Gulf oil spill is larger than the Exxon Valdez disaster, and is still growing. The latest containment option attempt could result in a temporary oil flow increase of up to 20 percent, as the riser pipe coming from the blowout preventer must be cut. The U.S. Geological Survey also found the leak could be gushing at a rate almost four times BP's recent estimates.

The uncertainty of the crisis is most unnerving. BP and U.S. government officials both warn that the leak may flow until August should this latest attempt fail. The BP Gulf oil spill is worse than the Exxon Valdez disaster now, one shudders at what it may be by August.

Flow Rate Technical Group Gulf Disaster Estimates

U.S. Geological Survey Director Marcia McNutt made public findings by the Flow Rate Technical Group last week. The researchers determined that on May 17 the Gulf of Mexico’s surface had at least 130,000 barrels of oil on it. The also surmised that a similar amount had either been skimmed off the ocean’s surface or evaporated. The panel's findings are that at least 260,000 barrels of oil had spilled into the Gulf as of May 17.

McNutt said 'this is obviously a very, very significant environmental disaster and I think with the numbers I've given you, you can do the math.'

The Flow Rate Technical Group best estimate for the oil leakage is 12,000-19,000 barrels per day. In their calculations the Flow Rate Technical Group use three measurement methods. Of these the high-end rate of is 25,000 barrels per day. Recall that BP’s estimate was that the amount of oil pouring from the fractured well was 5,000 barrels per day (210,000 gallons/795,000 liters).

The Deepwater Horizon rig exploded on April 20. If we take the low-end estimate of an oil flow of 12,000 barrels (504,000 gallons/1.9 million liters) a day the BP Gulf oil spill is larger than the Exxon Valdez disaster. The total amount of oil leaked from the well is 444,000 barrels (18.65 million gallons/70.59 million liters). This almost twice the amount of oil spilled from the Exxon Valdez.

The government's lowest estimate is over twice the estimate repeatedly cited by BP officials of about 5,000 barrels though company officials have said the estimate is unreliable.

Mississippi and Alabama Threatened

Up until this point Louisiana's sensitive wetlands and fishing grounds have taken the brunt of the oil spill. The Mississippi Delta states of Mississippi and Alabama have only seen tar balls scattered on their coasts so far. However the besieged area is expected to increase as moderate southerly and southwesterly winds pick up. The latest National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration 72-hour prediction sounds ominous warnings for the Mississippi Delta.

NOAA said in it’s forecast, “Model results indicate that oil may move north to threaten the barrier islands off Mississippi and Alabama later in the forecast period.'

The NOAA forecast underscores concerns for an ever-widening area. If the slick continues to grow through August the threats cannot be understated. Florida, Cuba and Mexico are all under threat with the huge currents that can carry the oil spill.

Coming to grips with the fact that the BP Gulf oil spill is worse than the Exxon Valdez disaster is mind numbing. Coming to grips with the fact the disaster is going to be significantly more is chilling.

Expect more wildlife to die, more jobs to be lost with more businesses and communities destroyed. What is sobering is BP has still not been able to stop the gushing well with the obvious problems of a well over a mile deep. In a world of political ineptitude, of a global economic crisis, political scandal and hot air we really need the government to get this one right.

Carolina lets hope so but if the latest try doesn't work we are looking to August. That is going to be ton of oil spewing out, not pretty. This week is critical.

This is a scary one. It appears BP does not know how to stop this thing, and I fear for the wildlife that is so important for us emotionally and physically. I continue to hope it can somehow be stopped and the damage minimized, but it is not looking good at present. Sad thing for the southeast, the coast, the country, and wildlife. V

Great article billyaustindillon. They are planning to drill a relief well, to take the pressure off the leaking well and cap it. This can happen in August. By that time it is going to be a total disaster. They have to find out some other operations urgently to stop the flow from the well. Rating it up!!

Yes Valerie it is sad and we are long way from stopping it, cleaning it up and coping with it rationally which is what we will have to do going forward.

Thanks for your feedback dinkan53, yes the relief well won't be completed until August - that is a long term for oil to flow unabated. Lets hope one of these other measures manages to stop the flow.

Habee it is looking that way with the Loop Current there, particularly if they can't stop it with the latest measure.

It appears that BP has a history of acting on "their" behalf and none other. Capitalism unchecked will bring about the end of human existence- unless we "make the punishments fit the crimes". Thanks Billy.

If it's any consolation, Billy, Attorney General Eric Holder is on his way to the Gulf to conduct an investigation to see if any civil or criminal laws have been violated. I am sure the locals will be able to spot him walking the marshes and shorelines looking for evidence. Just another dose of symbolism over substance in this disaster. Maybe the investigative interview he conducts will not take critical people away from their posts too long. Thanks for a good write! WB

Thanks for the update Wayne - it is just amazing the way they play their dog and pony show 42 days into it. They should be spending all their energy in cleaning up if there was civil or criminal laws violated isn't that a time for later - no doubt they will find something criminal in the clean up. Why do I have a sneaking suspicion that the government will hinder any further operation to stop the leak and clean up the mess? 42 days - wow!

Exxon Valdez? Please, oh please stop the comparison! Instead look at the similar disaster in 1979 in Mexico. "The parallels are striking. In June 1979, Petróleos Mexicanos’ exploration well Ixtoc 1 suffered a massive blowout in the Gulf of Mexico, about 600 miles south of Houston. The uncontrolled well gushed oil and gas for nine months and 22 days, spilling about 3.3m barrels of crude until it was finally capped in March 1980. As with BP in the current crisis, Pemex tried everything two decades ago, from the conventional to the radical, in its effort to contain the spill. Its efforts ranged from a cap or funnel above the well, or sombrero which largely failed, to pumping mud and debris in a “top kill” and “junk shoot” manoeuvre... The failure of the blowout preventer was critical – another parallel between the two incidents." (from US Society)

Everything BP has tried, was tried in '79, to no avail, until the relief well was drilled. So for the country or the world to think this is an "unprecedented" situation, well... it's just not true, except that the Ixtoc 1 wasn't a mile under water !

This happened before, and in all likelyhood, will happen again.

Anarchy unloosed by our corporate "friends" in the name of freedom and unregulated free market economics.

Guest thanks for your comments - the reason I compare it to the Exxon Valdez is because that is the largest US disaster and secondly because when you talk environmental damage that is what everyone talks about and blames big oil for the world's ills. Hopefully the mexico disaster isn't matched but if we run to August then sadly it is an ominous benchmark. Thanks for the link too.

Chasingcars thanks for your feedback though I don't think this is the result of unregulated free market economics in the oil fields given it's a regulated industry in the Gulf. However certainly lobbiests let the politicians take their eye off the ball and the profit motive may have let BP or transocean do safety/maintenance etc too quickly - we will see.

Yet, America screams blame for a second and goes back to using and abusing, 'cuz men loved the dark but hated the light. Do any of you honestly believe that blame is going to cork that pipe? If so drive to the gulf and cast your blame upon the water and pray it sinks down and plugs the well. We all wanted the bi-products from wells and never asked what well, or how is it coming to be, is it safe? Truth be known, none of you ever questioned it much less thought about it. I know I didn't.

Fact is I don't like Obama, but I don't believe that he is a worthy scape goat here. I don't recall anyone asking brother can you plug a runaway oil well? during his campaign. I want him impeached for bribing a public official, not for his lack of ability to pretend he even knows what to do now. For the love of money, not jobs or sea critters, you can bet those evil men at BP have the most capable men alive on the payroll trying to save their precious profit margin. Heck if they want sea food they'll just fire up the corporate jet and fly where the oil isn't.

Yeah I'm full of shit and you are not, right?

Billy, thanks for taking time to fill me in. I'm afraid we may see a third of the sea life lost before it's over washing ashore and rotting in the summer sun. The stench wafting to the jet streams and being distributed in wide areas so every one can get a sniff of greed in one of it's finest hours.

Imagine, folks breaking out of the divisive trance, coming together and try praying the well goes dry, looses pressure, or a slab of rock gets sucked up blocking the flow. A little Divine intervention that folks could scoff at the mere suggestion that such things don't happen.

Peace, 50
