Best Martial Arts Mats

Martial arts cover many disciplines including Judo, Aikido, Hapkido, Jujitsu, Karate, Taekwondo, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and Grappling and other heavy BJJ.  These disciplines all involve different techniques from striking to throws.  When you are choosing the best martial arts mats it depends on what discipline you practice. When selecting a martial arts Mat we look for density, rebound capability, durability and stability. Organizations such as the International Judo Federation set competition standards for martial arts mats. The huge popularity of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) has led to many multipurpose training mats.

Martial arts training mats need to enable correct training techniques in a comfortable manner. This means having enough rebound and non rash or graze surface for the multiple throws, grapples and takedowns.  Test the martial arts mats for shock absorbing capability. If you are looking at a lot of throwing and heavy workouts look for air-vent holes in your mats. The holes stop stitching being popped and extend the lifespan of your mats. Options for portable martial arts mats or for complete flooring and tumbling mats are also available. Consider safety, comfort and durability. When training martial arts the three golden pieces of equipment are your martial arts gloves, heavy training bag and martial arts mats

Mixed Martial Arts Mats

Mixed martial arts as the name suggests involves many martial arts disciplines. This means MMA martial arts mats have to dense enough to soften throws but firm enough to allow stand up and kickboxing.

MMA mats need durability for the heavier fighters and a smooth surface to avoid mat burn as all grappling mats require.

Check to see if the mats for MMA trading have anti-skid bottom surfaces. This is a very important safety feature.

If you are training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or any other discipline you may have seen on the UFC these are the mats you are looking for.

These mats are also used for Plyometrics workouts and extreme workouts like P90X.

Judo Martial Arts Mats

Judo is a discipline that involves a lot of throwing. Judo mats need to have a quality rebound response and durability and be resistant to tearing.

Judo martial rts mats also need to anti-skid bottom surfaces. Without the anti skid feature the mats can become slippery and injuries result. Many a judo player has been thrown on a hard wooden floor from a slipping martial arts mat.

Check when purchasing Judo martial arts mats that they are approved by the International Judo Federation or the U.S. Judo Federation.

Jigsaw Martial Arts Mats

Textured surface martial arts mats more geared towards Karate, kick boxing and stand up striking arts need to firmer for stability but still have enough shock absorption from throws and falls.

The textured surface allows more traction for practicing kicks and strikes. It is important that whatever martial arts mats you choose they best assimilate the competition surface martial artists will compete on.

Look at using jigsaw or interlocking mats if you expect a lot of wear and tear. Examples would be at a dojo or sports club. You simply just replace the part of the jigsaw damaged. The Eva foam mats allow you to cut them for different shapes such as an octagon or gym corner.

Martial arts, grappling in particularly can harbor infectious diseases so it essential that you choose surfaces that are easy to wipe down and clean.

They are many great drills for martial artists from grappling to yoga that you can use your martial mats for. Put together a list of drills from the guides we ahve selcted here.

Cool, Billy. I will not be buying any Martial Arts mats for a while but it is good to know which one is the best. For my future grandchildren, perhaps.

Have used many of these over the years, they need to be good quality to ensure that you avoid injury! Although a couple of my old instructors used to make a point of training the "seniors" off the mats so that they learned to fall on solid ground without injury!
