Bank of America Free Checking Accounts to End, More Taxpayer Largesse

So we had the great bailouts and nationalization of the banks. Whose money went towards that? Yes, yours the American taxpayer. The world has been put in a precarious state by the subprime fraudsters. I sit here reading the Wall Street Journal and am appalled that free checking accounts are about to end. Hardly free though when you consider we have lost so much of expected our services from these government bailouts. It can hardly be free when we effectively have paid for the banks survival and their ongoing salaries and bonuses. European banks are also being put to the hammer because of these trillion dollar losses

Yet the very few benefits that we get, like free checking accounts the consumer is expected to pay for? Here is another example of the one-way traffic the bankers lay on the people. Bank of America Corp and other American banks are set to eliminate free checking. They also plan to introduce new fees on basic banking services. Their argument is to replace the revenue lost to new banking regulations. When you consider regulations they are really about tax collecting. A bit rich when these are effectively nationalized banks using our taxpayer dollars.

Free Checking to be Eliminated

The backbone of the U.S. banking system is retail clients. They provide basically free money to the banking monoliths. However here they are going to be asked to pay new monthly maintenance fees. The amount will be charged on the most basic bank accounts. These are accounts that don’t generate much activity. Meaning that the accounts require not a lot of maintenance by the bank.

In classic manipulation customers will have to maintain account balances levels to avoid a fee. If they utilize other banking services they may also avoid the new account fees. So basically run up other fees on your credit, debit or ATM card and you get free checking.

The Wall Street Journal quoting industry estimates said it costs banks between $250 and $300 a year to maintain each of its checking accounts. There is estimated to be about 200 million checking accounts in America.

New Banking Overdraft Regulations

With the outcry of high overdraft fees being charged to unsuspecting customers new laws have been fashioned. I wonder  why the outcry? Banks will have to receive customer permission before levying an overdraft fee. Not sure how this will work in practice though.

Bank of America has already announced that it will suspend overdraft fee charges on all debit card transactions. This will apply when the new regulations kick in. Bank of America is revamping its checking-overdraft program in the face of new restrictions. That being said what is bothersome is the customer really gets no added benefit from these new regulations passed by congress. Seems the net result is just more window dressing with pomp and ceremony.

More Taxpayer Largesse

I then flip over the news and see the enforced BP recovery fund, and enforced withdrawal of the BP dividend to shareholders. Now I am all for BP paying for the crime, along with the other culprits. However this government political charade is fooling no one. I wonder why I feel a chill right now. It is one think to pull in the excesses of capitalism it is another to tell companies want to do at the expense of the people.

We have two glaring examples here with the last remnants of a bank with a feeling for the community. Now we have a government telling an international corporation what to do. It would make sense if we knew we the people would be in a better situation from all this big government intervention. Is there no end to what the US government will meddle and eliminate. Both cases are the result of government ineptitude.

We have these new laws and when all is said and done we the people get no real beneficial change. We actually get more fees, less income and dictated terms. Bank of America free checking accounts to end; consumers are expected to pay more. Taxpayer largesse, why are we not surprised?

I know from working for them that BOA has been sticking it's customers for years, raising interest rates, deliberatly changing due dates on credit cards to collect fees. They have the gull after recieving millions.

Jiberish yes their charges are outrageous and all that bailout money - just makes my blood boil. I guess compared to Goldman and Lehman they are the good eyes in some people's eyes.

The only competition the large elite banks have are the community banks that have been conservative, but personal over the years and credit unions. Credit Unions are much more transparent, less intimidating and more personal and personable.

The only statement we can make is when the large elite banks begin losing their clients to credit unions and smaller community banks. We the people do still have a voice and they do still need our money in loans, credit cards, deposit accounts, IRA's, savings accounts etc. Take away the money and they will get the picture.

RevLady you are very true - what would surprise me I guess is when the greed and lies and failures all turn around and they stop happening.

K thanks for your comments, the bailouts made them even more powerful and I dare say more arrogant. I agree with the credit unions and that has been happening which is pleasing.

It just goes to show how much "Unrighteousness"it is in the world without the application of God applied

to the regulation of it.I can,by the "power" and "ability" of God ajust to anything that they can come up with, and move on."Unrighteousness" shall increase in this world in the coming times of

humankind."Preparations" is most important.

Good thing I don't bank there. But all banks seem to be turning this way. Such a shame.

Sandy that is the problem - in the old days the bank customer relationship meant something. Now we are just statistics.

A Wonderful Article Billy. Thank you for letting us know we could possibly be looking at some simple banking fees in the future. If it will help the banking system, my family want mind paying for the free banking we have enjoyed. If it helps our country in the long run. I remember what John Kennedy once said, "It's not what your country can do for you, it is what you can do for your country. " If it keeps the banks from having to have to ask congress for money, then the banks can charge my family for the free banking. We thank them for the years of free banking they have been giving us.

As for BP, I truly understand your concerns. I do hope that the big money they will have to put out for disaster clean up want be comming out of the shallow pockets of consumers. It is usually the case. Our natural gas bill went up double this month, and we do not hardly even use it. Thinking about converting to all electric. Also thinking about fuel costs and energy sources, and how price hikes might just start happening to offset the gulf destruction. A lot to pray for, but at least most of us are still breathing and eating and got roofs over our heads, thank God for the blessings. God Bless you for your fine writing and education and knowledge you share. Sorry for the long comment. God Be with you and your loved ones.

Stars439 thanks you for your heart felt comment. I think when Kennedy said that it also implied governments and corporations wouldn't be bailed out by the public and taken care of. With the oil spill I agree we must come together. At the end of the day you are right we have a roof over our heads. :) Well most of us at least.
