Christmas Time with North Pole Santa

Father Christmas resides in the North Pole according to legend and why we often refer to him as North Pole Santa. European legend has Santa and Mrs. Claus living in the mountains of Korvatunturi in Lapland, Finland with reindeer. This is just down the road from the North Pole and may be just an intentional curve ball to throw kids off North Pole Santa’s scent. So is it North Pole Santa or Lapland Father Christmas as the majestic people of Finland and Estonia believe?  North Pole Santa spends all year in the snow except on December 24 when he dropping all those presents off.

The North Pole spends half the year in total darkness, and half in total light. Could you imagine a better place for Santa and his helpers to get through all those wish lists without interruption? It is a place surrounded by magic, all those elves and those flying reindeer led by Rudolph and his shiny nose. Santa’s legend is spread throughout the world with local traditions and is one of selfless giving to children and sharing holiday cheer. Who we know and love as North Pole Santa has his roots with Saint Nicholas. Over 2,000 years ago Saint Nicholas was born in the land we now call Turkey. He became an orphan and still revered today for his passions and services to Jesus Christ and to children. It is this love for Santa we have as children that makes North Pole Santa so special and magical today.

Journey to the North Pole

Have you made the decision to journey to the North Pole to find North Pole Santa and help he and Mrs. Claus with their many helpers make toys? If so then be prepared for cold, dark nights. Santa chooses the North Pole because it is hard to get to and only he has the magical reindeer. The North Pole is covered with shifting ice of the Arctic Ocean. The thickness of ice at the North Pole is an average of 3 to 4 meters. The North Pole latitude is 90° North and all lines of longitude converge there. This means North Pole longitude is at zero degrees.

The closest landmass to North Pole Santa is Greenland. Greenland is 700 km or 440 mi away. In the summer months in the North Pole the sun is always above the horizon. That means 187 straight days and night of light. In the winter month the sun is always below the horizon. This means there are 178 straight days and night of darkness. There are what is known as White Nights for 15-16 days on the changeover of sunrise and sunset at Santa’s North Pole.

It never gets too hot there and why Santa has warm traditional red suit and woolen trimmings. The average North Pole winter temperature is -34°C or -30°F. It warms up in summer to an average 0°C or 32°F. There have been signs of warming temperatures and melting ice over the past thirty years or so which scientists attribute to global warming. However many Santa strategists argue this could be because of the massive population increase in that time and the workspace and energy required by North Pole Santa to deliver.

North Pole Santa Ornaments

North Pole Santa is a favorite for Christmas ornaments. There of course is the compulsory snow cone with Santa and his sleigh heading from the North Pole with a sleigh stocked with presents.

There are Santa’s elves and you may find other ornaments from Santa’s workshop. Perhaps you may get lucky and get an ornament made by one of North Pole Santa’s elves.

You can find all different North Pole Santa ornaments. There are ornaments for the tree, for shelves even for your car. Indeed you can get ornaments from Harley Davidson keeping in tune with the cheeky side of Santa fans.

North Pole Animals

To be a North Pole animals is to be tough, a survivalist if you will. Polar being the key word. There is the polar bear, the polar fox and the polar hare. There are also the musk oxen North Pole Santa’s favorite reindeer. If you watched Polar Express you may be familiar with some of these. The North Pole Arctic Ocean is home to herring, cod, northern whale, walrus and seals.

Birdlife is also evident with around 250 bird species. There are the water birds such as the albatross, sea gulls and swans. Snowbirds that North Pole Santa may come across are the white partridge and snowy owl. Plant life in the North Pole is not as grand. The shifting ices limit Santa to moss, lichens and seaweed.

For me when I think of North Pole animals I think of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. Every Christmas we have a garden light Rudolph on the front line ready to guide Santa from his trip from the North Pole or Lapland down our chimney. I wonder if gets sick of those raccoons you might have heard?

Destiny's Child Rudolph the Rednose Reindeer

North Pole Santa’s Workshop

Santa Claus’s workshop in the North Pole is a hub of activity. If you have seen a Santa or Elf movie you know the elves are busy bees and love to sing as they work. It always a good time with your children having them tell you what they think is going on in Santa’s workshop. You will get some amazing responses. Ask them to share their list to Santa with you. Then ask them how do you think Santa will make that? Will Mrs. Claus help? Will the elves finish it up?

What does Santa’s workshop look like? Is it like a huge IKEA, well Sweden is not too far away from the North Pole. Is it like Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory? No silly it is Santa’s workshop!

When we think of North Pole Santa we think of the magic of Santa. We think of the sharing and passion that children bring in our lives. We think of the Christian spirit. We think of the fun times of Christmas songs like Rudolph the red nose reindeer. Some of us think of Movies like Polar Express or Elf. Whatever North Pole Santa means to you just remember one thing, remember when you were a little boy or girl how Santa made you smile.

Santa lovers the time is near when Santa climbs down your chimney full of good cheer. Feel free to leave comments about your Favorite North Pole Santa memory.

Very interesting educational hub. Becky pretty much still believes in Saint Nicholas. God Bless You.

We probably chose the North Pole because it was probably more identifiable in telling the story to children.

Rudolph is an interesting example of how a folk story changes. People much younger than myself probably do not remember when there was no Rudolph. Then one day Gene Autry, the cowboy singer, needed to fill side B of a recording in the days of 78 rpm records. Someone presented the Rudolph song. He didn't like it but his wife did, so he recorded it.She said it reminded her of the ugly duckling story, and she is right, I think.

Thanks for that insight into Rudolph dahoglund I had no clue - I am glad I picked Gene Autrey for the site. I think some of North Pole is with the Norse men and Pagan integration with Saint Nic - hence the Lapland alt.

Great Christmassy hub. I love all the christmas songs and carols. My favourite carol is Silent Night and my favourite Christmas song is Driving home for Christmas.

Santa is definatley from the North Pole. No wonder he makes all those toys if it is so cold and dark for all those months lol.

It was two years ago when we started it with my daughter. Every Christmas eve we would hang big boots/socks on the window sill and would ask her to sleep early so Santa can come to deliver her gift. Last Christmas she requested for a set of kitchen toys. She was very happy when she found her gift from Santa and wrote a letter saying her thanks.

We lived in Fairbanks, Alaska for three years, and just outside Fairbanks is the town of North Pole, AK. Naturally, there is a Christmas store there and that is the headquarters for all the letters addressed to Santa Claus at North Pole, AK. It is official because Santa writes back if you send a letter there. So, it doesn't really matter what we believe, the fact is Santa lives in North Pole, AK. See for yourself. Write a letter!

Many Thanks for the reminder.
