Paul McCartney Reissues Wings and Solo Catalog
63Paul McCartney Reissues Wings and Solo Catalog
Paul McCartney to reissue Wings and solo catalog on an indie label after being with conglomerate EMI Group PLC for years. McCartney has moved to independent label Concord Music Group. The former Beatle is reissuing his post-Beatles catalog of over 20 albums. Fans can look forward to bonus material with the reissue.
This isn’t a total surprise given McCartney's 2007 album 'Memory Almost Full' as well as his 2009 CD/DVD hybrid 'Good Evening New York City.' were released on Concord.
Concord distributed these albums on Hear Music, the Starbucks Corp and Concord partnership. EMI distributed McCartney’s Wings and solo work under exclusive license, which had expired.
Band on The Run
First reissue out of the relationship is the massive Wings album 'Band on the Run’ which was the number one album back in 1973. The release date is August and will have a rare bonus material on the album. Venus and Mars from Wings would likely follow soon after.
Reissues will include the Wings' single Mull of Kintyre the first single to sell more than two million copies in the UK in 1977 and still holds the record as the UK's top selling non-charity single (Candle in the wind being the charity leader).
McCartney's announcement came as he celebrated the 40th anniversary of the release of 'McCartney', his first post Beatles outing and has the still timely classic 'Maybe I'm Amazed.'
It should be noted the Concord deal has no affect on the Beatles EMI relationship. EMI reissued remastered versions of the Beatles albums last September. These remastered albums sold 13 million copies by January, giving the music industry a much-needed boost.
Rounder Records for Vintage Collectibles
Concord has been a label in the news with its acquisition of the American roots label Rounder Records a week ago. Rounder is best known for its Americana and folk roster including Grammy award winning bluegrass artist Alison Krauss. Krauss won the Grammy with Robert Plant last year with the album bringing Bluegrass to the masses. With McCartney being on an indie label we look forward to more collector vintage material.
I for one look forward to the Wings albums with Paul McCartney to reissue Wings and solo catalog. Do you have any favorites from the post Beatles career?

I really liked John Lennon and believe he was the win,win factor of the Beatles. I never cared for McCartney's productions post break up of the group. George Harrison did a few I liked and Ringo's Caveman movie was funny as hell, but I don't recall anything that set him apart musically. I'm a cynic and I always liked Johns ability to be the best cynic I've enjoyed over the years.
I know folks liked Pauls post break up productions, I just am not one of them.
Thanks for this memories provoking hub. Looking at the history of the beatles group, should keep us ever mindful of the brevity of life.
Forever His,
Cool! I love Band on the RUn!
billy i learnt alot from this here one.
Great hub. Love the music.
Mcartney is a great music artist with the history to back it up but why he feels the need to remind us of this by rehashing his solo meterial over and over again is a total mystery. Maybe he should release a box set of rare meterial and single mixes, now that would be major!
I hadn't thought of McCartney's Wings for a long time!
Never much followed them in their solo careers but I remember slumber parties in my high school days with girlfriends and most of us thought that Paul was the most handsome of the Beatles. Looooooooong time ago! Ha!
Hi billy-this is not fair,You are testing me.Never mind I have the stock words ready for this one. Here they come-Hey billy great hub nice read,awesome,voted-up.Thanks.
McCartny solo has lots to offer. If you missed it the first time around, you should explore, You'll discover memorable, well crafted deep cuts on most albums. A good start are the early solo jobs "McCartney" and "Wings Wild Life" with deep cuts like Junk, Man We Was Lonely, Momma Miss America, Some People Never Know, Dear Friend, Love is Strange, Oh Woman Oh Why, and Little Woman Love that offer a diverse mix of pleasures. Of course there's fluff, but more than enough to justify the price of admission. I'd avoid "Back to the Egg" "Press to Play" and McCartney II, but even they have something to offer deep in the grooves. In later years, "Flaming Pie" is a standout pretty much from start to finish. There's lots in this back catalog. Paul got a bit mired every now and then, but this is a standout catalog with lots to discover and enjoy.
I wouldn't totally trust their promises...so many times they say they're going to reissue and then stop after 1 or 2 batches...people seem to suspect of a reissue but I promise you the sound will be better than from 1990 or so...i have the UK imports to me the American issued CDs were horrid (I'm American)...we'll see how good they are with the Band on the Run reissue and i'm not at all thinking it won't be anything less than fantastic...maybe it's just Band on the Run as it's their premiere release and based on how that does they'll have an idea what will happen next...but i'm not really thinking they'll sell amazingly well in a few months span but i do think over time they'll sell a great number especially if they find B-sides and unissued tracks that might've went to other kind of releases such as freebies for various benefits in it's time period...like spies like us could be included on pipes of peace or the album that followed that one...mull of kintyre belongs to london town (which wasn't originally on an album)...so there's alot they can add since they have so much space on the cds...cds hold 90 minutes for labels 80 minutes for consumers...plus i'm not sure how many people have Ram and McCartney these days since it's been out of print for years.
I am reviewing McCartney's solo outputs right now. At the time of his solo releases, I was a big McCartney fan and I thought he could do no wrong. Now, having studied a lot of the Beatles recording techniques, my reviews have been less than stellar on his solo career. Drop by and check my reviews out.
