Russ Shaw, Skype's general manager for mobile, said in an interview that Skype intends to begin charging for calls to enable it to fund technology development. The clarity of 3G, and later 4G is much higher and therefore more technological intensive.

Shaw said with regards to pricing, 'We're not going to want to price ourselves out of the market,' and 'I can't ignore the fact that consumers use us for free.'

A Skype spokeswoman said there had been nearly five million downloads by Wednesday morning. Shaw in his interview said 'we've had millions of downloads to date,' and 'That's really positive.'

You can download the latest version of the Skype application from the Apple AppStore. The app will allow you to use your iPhone to make and receive Skype-to-Skype calls, call telephones and instant message. You can perform these functions over 3G and WiFi.

For those that use Skype, myself being one this is great news. We now have a wider spectrum available to us. This combined with the opera browser for iPhone I would think would significantly speed up download time and data transfers for Skype also. Skype has said they intend to be able to support an app for the new iPhone.
