Skype to Charge for 3G calls

The huge success of nearly 5 million consumers downloading the Skype app underscores its popularity. However also announced at he launch that they intend to charge a small fee for 3G Skype-to-Skype calls in 2011.

There will be much resistance to the pay move given Skype was invented in Estonia to allow free calls on your computer or mobile phone. From those humble beginnings it was bought by eBay and resold to private investors for billions.

Russ Shaw, Skype's general manager for mobile, said in an interview that Skype intends to begin charging for calls to enable it to fund technology development. The clarity of 3G, and later 4G is much higher and therefore more technological intensive.

Shaw said with regards to pricing, 'We're not going to want to price ourselves out of the market,' and 'I can't ignore the fact that consumers use us for free.'

A Skype spokeswoman said there had been nearly five million downloads by Wednesday morning. Shaw in his interview said 'we've had millions of downloads to date,' and 'That's really positive.'

Skype the Next Generation

For those that use Skype, myself being one this is great news. We now have a wider spectrum available to us. This combined with the opera browser for iPhone I would think would significantly speed up download time and data transfers for Skype also. That the new Skype App for 3G iPhone has 5 million downloads in 3 days shows you the reach Skype now commands. The new iPhone 4.0 is expected to be launched by Apple on June 7. Skype has said they intend to be able to support an app for the new iPhone.

Truth - thanks for your feedback.

Skype will still be cheaper than an ordinary local fone call. I use Skype and although the call quality can vary like crazy (from good to indescribably bad)- it is worth having. In the UK Skype is available on the 3 network already. It has proven itself. Great hub!

billyaustindillon 23 months ago

Cheeky Girl I agree Skype is great and yes there are some times when it plays up. I find if you reboot in those situations it usually comes back ok. It is good that they are spending the dollars there to make it better.

Interesting. I admit I don't seem to need it. Maybe I'm weird. LOL whoa there - not so fast to agree!

billyaustindillon 23 months ago

Nellieanna you aren't weird what you are is unique in this modern tech driven world - you have your own opinion! That being said Skype is one of the best tech tools out there for people with families and friends in different countries and locales. I use it everyday and the best bit - it is free!

I couldn't do without Skype but I wish Canada would allow Canadian number listings... then I could gleefully clip my tethered line.

billyaustindillon 23 months ago

Silver Genes thanks for your feedback - perhaps Canada will get with the program soon. That would make sense. One way to do it - is make Canada you one free county to call phones on. that way all calls from your Skype are free to Canada. You get to pick nominate one destination on Skype.

I can't wait to get an iPad it seems to be so useful with the iPhone and iTouch, but without a smart phone I will have to just read about it. LOL

The next generation should prove even better Research Analyst. There seems to be new bells and whistles coming out all the time for the Apple devices.
