Oil Spill Threatens Oysters Marine Ecosystem

The Gulf oil spill threatens oysters marine ecosystem as the massive oil slick from the ruptured undersea wellhead of Deepwater Horizon drilling rig make’s it’s way to the Louisiana coastline. Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill Mobilizes Wildlife Rescue Teams. However there are limitations as to just what can be done to save oysters.

Oysters are more than a menu item they are a critical part of the marine ecosystem of the gulf coast. The extent of the oil spill is highlighted as the Oil Spill Closes Gulf Fishing oysters however are perhaps the most vulnerable marine creatures threatened by the oil spill. It should not be underestimated the roll oysters play with the marine food chain, including shrimp and crabs.

Oyster Reefs Threatened

Oysters play an integral part of a marine ecosystem. They provide and sustain reefs, filter water and are members of the food chain. They are also vulnerable to changes in the environment. You may not read about the oyster environmentally too often because they don’t provide the buzz clips that are a bird or dolphin can. However oyster reefs have declined by around 85 percent over the last thirty years. Due to natural disaster and human coastal developments around the world oysters natural environments have been devastated globally.

Nature Conservancy ‘Shellfish at risk report’ in 2009 spoke of the decimation of the world’s oyster beds. “Once dominant features in many temperate estuaries around the world, native oyster reefs are critically important ecologically and economically. Centuries of intensive fisheries extraction exacerbated by more recent coastal degradation have put oyster reefs near or past the point of functional extinction globally.”

In America Chesapeake Bay is famous for it’s shellfish and crabs. Astonishingly it has seen almost its entire oyster beds vanish, 99 percent according to Nature Conservancy’s Mike Beck. Beck sees the Gulf Coast as the world's 'last, best' chance for maintaining a healthy natural oystery. This is why this spill is so critical as the Gulf region still maintains over 50 percent of its oyster reefs.

Oysters Marine Ecosystem

The oyster’s marine ecosystem is an integral part of the U.S. Gulf Coast. Oysters form reefs built over thousands of years, not unlike live coral reefs. The U.S. Gulf region houses the world's last intact network of oyster reefs. These reefs provide home and sanctuary for oysters  and for a multitude of interactive marine species. Oysters filter water for their own existence; in a reef this has the affect of taking filtering water for what ever lays beyond, in this case the wetlands of the Gulf Coast. They act to improve the habitat for all animals in the ecosystem including turtles, fish, crabs and birds. This also makes them particularly vulnerable to the oil spill, which literally has the potential to choke the life out of them.

There is also the benefit that comes from the oyster reefs proximity to land. On the gulf coast this is particularly pertinent given the frequency of hurricanes in the region. Oyster reefs form nature breakwaters that help protect the coastal area from storm surges. This also helps beach erosion and acts like a protective wall for the fragile wetlands and it’s unique animal Microsystems. Thus it helps insulate habitats many of nature’s perils. They are feeding grounds when the reefs are below water for marine life and at low tide for birdlife.

Oyster Spat

Oysters spread by what is none as a ‘spat’. The spat is where billions of tiny baby oysters are released into the ocean. There are the size of specks and drift until they settle on a reef where they will spend the rest of their life and develop into fully-grown oysters. Unfortunately adding to oysters woes the oil spill has occurred right with the peak season for the oyster spat. What already a difficult process for the baby oysters just got infinitely worse.

Oysters are effectively the front line to the oil spill as it meanders onshore. Nature will play its hand here, will the weather and seas help turn the spill around or make it more potent? There is the potential for the oil spill to be greater than the 1989 Exxon Valdez disaster.

Oysters, the Gulf’s Economic Engine

Environmentally the oil spill may be devastating to the marine ecosystem on the coast. It could also be devastating economically. Fishermen in the region have already been affected with the oil spill closing off fishing. Given the significance of oysters in the marine ecosystem it is safe to say the Gulf’s oyster beds are critical to all of the commercial and recreational fishing industry in the region.

The U.S. Gulf Coast accounts for 70 percent of a U.S. oyster harvest that was valued at $131.6 million in 2008. Much of the oyster reefs along the coast have had containment booms set up around them. The success of these really depends on the seas not becoming too big before the oil can be broken down and removed.

The Gulf oil spill threatens oysters marine ecosystem, which in turn threatens the whole economic and environmental health of the coastal states. Jamie Rappaport Clark, the executive vice president of Defenders of Wildlife and a former head of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said 'It is not only the economic engine of this region, it is a real indicator of the environmental and ecological health of the Gulf Coast area.'

Oh, no! What a terrible news :( I love oysters so much, they are my favorite food. And gathering oysters is a lot of fun. Let's hope they will survive!

Very big concern. From your report I see that they're even more important ecologically than I realized. And economically, as well - very vital. What a shame if they are to be endangered to virtual extinction! Maybe we need to rethink our need to use fossil fuels as wastefully as we do. By the time we fully realize the trade-offs - the vital trade-offs - it will be too late to beging to prevent extermination of entire biological ecosystems. So foolish.

Thanks for the informative article, Billy.

Everything I read about this oil spill, my heart sinks. Thanks for keeping us posted.

Wanderlust lets hope so - I love them also but they have to be fresh or you can get terribly sick. What worries me is a year ago there was a report done that 85% of the world's reefs were gone and there really hasn't been a lot done to reverse that.

Nellieanna thanks, that is what drove me to research this article was the importance that oysters play to all marine life in it's region. Economically also they have a huge affect. The affects are far reaching from an oil spill with little bits popping up everyday.

Sandy yes hopefully there will be some good news to report on this incident. Though really there is nothing good about oil spills.

Quill thanks for the feedback. Yes the long term affects are frightening. It is amazing what just gets brushed under the carpet, or under the reef in this instance.

This news is shocking that Oil Spill Threatens Oysters Marine Ecosystem. We have to change technique or take proper training it will protect to our environment.

Being from a "lil island off the Coast of TX" I totally understand all of this. Our oyster reefs and marine life have been suffering due to all the pollution spread in the ocean for quite some time now. I was and am sickened to the depth of my soul for this spill. It will have catestrophic consequences to us all

THANK YOU for writing this hub. It helps people further understand who do not live near the ocean and know of the perils man causes to it. Many Blessings to you!

Wealthmadehealthy good to see you, I am so sorry that you are experiencing this spill first hand. The pollution and natural events like Hurricanes have already taken a toll I shudder to think where this can take us. I am happy to write articles like this for those very reasons. I think it is necessary as so much is taken for granted. BTW I am just up the road from that island )

Katie that is very good point the BP execs do seem to be almost surreal like here comes another media spin blah blah It seems the other oil company people are showing all the emotion - no doubt livid with BP transocean and whoever made that faulty part.

Do I have to worry about ordering seafood and oysters from the restaurant menu for fear that they may have been contaminated from the spill? Or is restaurant food not affected?

billyaustindillon profile image

billyaustindillon Hub Author 2 years ago

It depends where the seafood is from, for example the majority of shrimp in America is from Asia. The Gulf has 70% of the oysters though. What is for sale from the gulf would be from unaffected areas.

Pollyannalana profile image

Just a sign of the times, it probably will seem small compared to what will happen next,it is like the earth is falling down all around us, who or what will be next? I remember years ago for some reason we had to stop buying wonderful hams and I don't even like ham til those, from Iran.

What that has to do with anything I've no idea but just being called a liar and a liberal on my last hub about homeless children just sort of makes me think how a ball starts rolling and can never be stopped, that is my feeling this morning, will there ever be hope or even a chance it won't get worse and worse. To bad those of us who care can do nothing to stop it.

billyaustindillon profile image

billyaustindillon Hub Author 2 years ago

It is amazing Pollyannalana how quickly sheep get on board without thought to reason or what is shocking in the US in the past years - probbaly the last 15 everything is black and white left and right liberal conservative without thought. There is much that is grey and should be treated as such - this is what used to be called conservative btw - responsibility and a recognition of change and a slow (grey) movement where necessary. Conservatives are said to be socially responsible - this doesn't mean welfare and assistance for change - I read your hub and you highlighted how many children were on the street it may have taken liberal policys to put them there but that doesn't mean I right leaning person ignores them - unless I am missing something. Also when it comes to being responsible for the environment that used to be a conservative trait also - like what is happening here - we need to just pull our heads in and take a deep breath and realize what the heck is going on. I hope I answred your question :)

Pollyannalana profile image

Pollyannalana 2 years ago

You did...it's hopeless, lol. No you are right, we all seem to be pulling apart instead of working together, but I don't see that will change. How can it when the ones in control see the underdog as an ant to step on and crush until there are no more left to bother them. It can't just be some of us willing. Thx, Polly

billyaustindillon profile image

billyaustindillon Hub Author 2 years ago

Polly I think eventually the people just simple say enough is enough - where is the tipping point I don't know. it comes from mass thinking as an individuals rather than as herds. I really wonder how we will do if we get into a situation like Greece. Will people be able to cope? I don't the majority will be able to. Lets hope - how many disasters do we need before we realize the leadership is rotten to the core? Leadership meaning political, corporate, community, legal - am I missing anything. The basics are still there of a good nation - one thing from the oil spill you have seen the locals bond together and outside organizations come into help.

Hi billyaustindillon,

I like that you bring attention to this subject. Much of the world around us is feeling the effects of man's mal-use of his environment. I find this sad, and in many ways, I wish things were different.

What can be done to remedy to this situation?

billyaustindillon profile image

billyaustindillon Hub Author 21 months ago

Stephane I think the first thing is education about the fragile inter relationships between man and nature. Educating the public and the political forces. Making people care beyond themselves would be start - the world is in such a materialistic tailspin of materialistic values that it is going to big tough ask but hopefully this event will alert some to what needs to be done. Thanks for your comment.

The fishermen seem to be back in business now but I wonder how much microscopic oil bits are being worked into our diets even if deemed "safe" by the USDA?

billyaustindillon profile image

billyaustindillon Hub Author 9 months ago

Peggy I have little faith in the USDA being clean on the 'dirty' levels - one has to be skaptical at best.
